This is the most popular season for proposing and it got us here at diamonds.co.nz thinking about the amazing destinations to propose at home in New Zealand. There are so many beautiful and picturesque spots around the country that is was hard to narrow down to just five! Have a read of our Top 5 picks for some ‘popping the question’ inspiration- New Zealand style.

1. Queenstown

The central lake and the surrounding mountains make this town a romantic destination all year round.  With great lookouts over the city from mountain tops, private hot pools with views over the Shot Over river, first-class wineries and world renowned restaurants, the options are endless. Queenstown is beautiful in any season.

2. Auckland

Lets be honest, there is no shortage of great places to propose in Auckland. With Waiheke Island and its amazing vineyards and beaches only a quick ferry ride away, this destination calls for a perfect day trip. Try a walk up Mount Eden with its view over Auckland City. The Sky Tower looks particularly spectacular from up here at night. Or how about a fancy hotel in central Auckland with an equally fancy hotel stay (and possibly throw in a massage at the hotel spa to top it off).

3. Marlborough Sounds

The Marlborough Sounds is a spectacular part of New Zealand. Lined with many private white sand beaches that are reached by the many walking tracks or boat only, this is the perfect set up for a romantic and secluded proposal. Hire some kayaks or take a boat trip at sunset. Finish the day by booking in to one of the many boutique-style hotels that are completely off the radar.

4. Coromandel Peninsula

Only a 2 hour drive from Auckland City, the Coromandel Peninsula is the perfect destination for a weekend getaway. Try digging your own hot pool at Hot Water Beach or pack a picnic and wander down to Cathedral Cove from Hahei (this gets very popular during the weekends over summer so be careful if you want it to be reasonably private). Or try the Driving Creek Mountain Railway in the Coromandel Township for something a bit special.

5. Otago Peninsula

CNN listed our very own Otago Peninsula as one of its top 10 destinations for proposing on Valentine’s Day, and we agree! The South Islands unusual wildlife – home to colonies of yellow- eyed penguins, fur seals, blue penguins and the royal albatross, as well as its wild coastline to match makes the Otago Peninsula particularly special.
