Diamond Grading Reports

Diamond Grading Reports

Diamond grading reports are issued by diamond grading laboratories and outline the diamond characteristics that determine their quality.

Most diamonds we currently sell on diamonds.co.nz come with Gemological Institute of America (GIA) reports. A smaller number are accompanied by reports from the International Gemological Institute (IGI).

GIA

GIA was established in 1931 and is headquartered in Carlsbad, California. In addition to being a leading educational institute, GIA provides diamond grading reports, which the GIA Gem Trade Laboratory issues.

GIA grades diamonds of all shapes and sizes and was the creator of the 4Cs that are used to describe diamond quality.

There are two types of diamond reports that the GIA Gem Trade Laboratory issues:

  • GIA Diamond Reports: for diamonds 1ct and over
  • GIA Diamond Dossiers: for diamonds under 1ct

GIA Diamond Report

GIA Diamond Reports are issued for diamonds of all shapes and sizes above 1.00ct.

The report includes a comprehensive analysis of a diamond's quality, an assessment of the diamond's 4C's and a plot of the diamond's clarity characteristics, and also includes polish and symmetry grades.

GIA Diamond Dossier®

The GIA Diamond Dossier® is a compact report for diamonds of all shapes weighing under 1.00ct on GIA's D-Z colour scale.

The Dossier includes an analysis of the diamond's 4C's but — unlike the GIA Diamond Report — does not include a plot of the diamond's clarity characteristics.

All diamonds with a GIA Diamond Dossier have the Dossier number laser-inscribed on the girdle.

IGI

IGI is another well-known diamond institute whose diamond reports bring confidence when buying or selling diamonds. IGI have a staff of over 450 professionals, and issues more than 1 million diamond reports per year.

It is the largest organisation of its kind, with operating laboratories and offices in locations including Antwerp, New York, Hong Kong, Mumbai, Bangkok, Tokyo, Dubai, Tel Aviv and Toronto.

IGI Diamond reports

IGI Diamond Reports are issued for diamonds of any weight. A plotted diagram of the diamond's characteristics and a graphical representation of its proportions appear on many IGI diamond reports.
